Refraction: Refractions in Colour and Mind

Melbourne jazz trio Refraction melds the colours of contemporary jazz composition and improvisation together into a compelling musical soundscape.

Centred around drummer and leader Chris Broomhead’s compositions, the trio celebrates the sanctity of simplicity, upholding the primacy of a song’s melody while leaving space for collective ensemble interaction and improvisation.

Refraction’s line-up of Chris Broomhead on drums, Brenton Foster on piano and Jordan Tarento on double bass are joined by Melbourne filmmaker Bethany Hamburg who will create customised visuals and lighting.

The resulting premier performance promises to be a unique musical and visual experience, taking Kew Court House audiences on a journey through the mind and spirit of Refraction’s music.

Aged Care: What every family should know - Info Session

After the wonderful success of our Aged Care Seminar earlier this year, we're very pleased to announce we'll be hosting Jayne from Millennium Aged Care Consultants once again!

Those who attended this seminar in March were blown away about how much they didn't realise they didn't know.

It's not just for those who need advice immediately. It's certainly something that is beneficial to know about for future reference so you can prepare as early as possible.

Having an industry expert explain the ins and outs of the complex Aged Care system in Australia opened our eyes to how much research and planning needs to be done,
and how far in advance!

You are welcome to come along with questions for Jayne.

Light refreshments are provided on the night.

Kindred at Kew Court House: Tilman Robinson & Happy Axe

Join the extended Spirit Level family as they carefully curate a night of atmospheric sounds.

After a sell-out showcase in 2017, one of Melbourne’s most exciting creative communities returns to the Kew Court House to bring you intimate performances from two fearless sonic explorers: Tilman Robinson andHappy Axe

Tilman Robinson is a Melbourne composer and sound designer whose diverse output focuses on the psychological impact of sound. He builds immersive sound worlds out of a combination of organic and electronic source material. Find out why his live performance has been described by the Guardian as "mesmerising - music that is at once soothing and avant-garde, but never anything other than warmly human."

Happy Axe is Canberra-based musician Emma Kelly, who crafts richly textured and dreamlike ambient songs out of layers of vocals, violin and musical saw. Happy Axe will be showcasing songs from her forthcoming debut album "Dream Punching", which merges David Lynch-like moods and exquisite musicality into a hypnotic blend of light and shade.

Spirit Level is an artist-run music label devoted to developing unique creative voices. The label was co-founded by two friends, Double J radio presenter and musician Tim Shiel and Grammy award-winning artist Gotye, who have long been passionate champions of innovative local music.

Don’t miss your chance to see Melbourne’s brightest new talent up close and personal.

KewFest - McIntyre Lecture - Melbourne Street Life: The Itinerary of our Days

MCINTYRE LECTURE by Professor Andrew J. May

The Kew Historical Society is pleased to announce that Andrew J May, Professor in the School of Historical & Philosophical Studies, University of Melbourne, will present the 2018 McIntyre Lecture during the Kew Festival.

As a social historian, Professor May has published widely on the social experience and cultures of the Australian city - including Melbourne Street Life (1998), Espresso! Melbourne coffee stories (2001), and The Encyclopedia of Melbourne (2005). He is the Historian member on the Victorian Heritage Council.

Ugo Catani’s A Summer Shower in Collins Street, 1889, will set the scene for Professor May’s invitation to walk the streets of Melbourne, imagine the everyday past, and see the urban landscape with new eyes. For artists and historians, the street frames the ever-changing throng of the wealthy and down-andout, the passers-by, shoppers, idlers, hawkers, larrikins, prostitutes, custodians and law-breakers.

It is the stage of ritual, procession and protest and the site of proud architecture, fine trees and public utilities. And it also has its hazards. In the lecture, Professor May will discuss the growth and transformation of a great Australian city and the balance between the need for public order and the democratic right to public space.

Date: Wednesday 14 March 2018
Time: 7.30pm for 8.00pm
Venue: ‘Just Theatre’, Kew Court House, 188 High Street, Kew, 3101
A limited number of seats will be available, so bookings are essential.
